Danube Park, the riverside quay and Štrand beach: Novi Sad by the water
A shady park in the middle of town, a long riverside promenade and a sandy beach on the Danube – this is where Novi Sad goes to slow down.

Danube Park
Just a few minutes from Liberty Square, Danube Park (Dunavski park) is the green living room of the city centre. It was laid out at the end of the 19th century and still feels like an old city park, with tall trees, benches in the shade, sculptures and a small lake with an island in the middle.
It is a good place to rest between sightseeing stops, read for an hour or simply watch daily life: grandparents with children, students on lunch breaks, people walking their dogs. In summer the park sometimes hosts concerts and small events.
Along the quay
From the park, head down to the river and follow the quay (Sunčani kej and Kej žrtava racije). This long promenade runs beside the Danube with a view across to Petrovaradin Fortress, and it is popular with joggers, cyclists and evening walkers.
On the way you will pass a memorial to the victims of the January 1942 raid, when occupying forces killed many of the city’s civilians, a large number of them Jews and Serbs, and threw their bodies into the frozen Danube. It is a quiet, moving spot that is worth a moment of your time.
Keep walking and you reach Liberty Bridge (Most slobode), a cable-stayed bridge opened in 1981. It was destroyed during the NATO bombing in 1999 and rebuilt, reopening in 2005. Today it is one of the most recognisable shapes on the Novi Sad skyline.
Štrand, the city beach
Next to Liberty Bridge lies Štrand, Novi Sad’s best-known beach. It opened in 1911 and has been the summer escape for the city ever since. Expect a long stretch of sand along the Danube, shady trees behind it, and plenty of places for a cold drink or a quick bite.
The beach is busiest on hot weekends from June to August, when it fills with families during the day and a younger crowd in the evening. During the swimming season there is a small entrance fee, and lifeguards watch the marked swimming area. Outside the season it becomes a peaceful place for a riverside walk.
Liman and the riverside neighbourhoods
Behind Štrand stretches Liman, a residential district with wide streets, parks and the university campus. It is not a sightseeing area as such, but it is calm and green and close to the river, which is why many visitors choose to stay there – especially in summer, when the beach is a short walk away.
